INSPECTOR LAVARDIN COLLECTION

Chicken With Vinegar and Inspector Lavardin Will Be Available in a Two-Disc Blu-ray Set for the First Time in the U.S. Beginning April 22, 2014
Two mystery-suspense films from the French master Claude Chabrol will make their U.S. Blu-ray debut when the Cohen Film Collection releases the INSPECTOR LAVARDIN COLLECTION on April 22, 2014. The two-disc set, also available on DVD, features digitally remastered editions of Chicken With Vinegar and its sequel, Inspector Lavardin, as well as two Lavardin television films by Chabrol. SRP for the Blu-ray set is $49.98, while the DVD is $39.98.

Among the scores of acclaimed films directed by Claude Chabrol (Les Cousins, Les Biches, The Unfaithful Wife, The Butcher, Madame Bovary, The Flower of Evil), two of his most popular remain the murder mysteries featuring police inspector Jean Lavardin. Academy Award nominee Jean Poiret (La Cage aux Folles, The Last Metro) stars as the seasoned inspector, while his co-stars include famed French actors (and Chabrol regulars) Michel Bouquet (The Bride Wore Black, Just Before Nightfall, Renoir), Jean-Claude Brialy (Les Cousins, A Woman Is a Woman), Bernadette Lafont (Le Beau Serge, Such a Gorgeous Kid Like Me) and Chabrol's muse and longtime wife Stéphane Audran (The Unfaithful Wife, The Butcher, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie).

In Chicken With Vinegar (1985, also known as Coq au Vin), based on the novel Une mort en trop by Dominique Roulet, a cruel invalid (Stéphane Audran) who consistently terrorizes her teen son into abject obedience is threatened with the loss of her home by a conniving trio who want her property as part of a deal for a lucrative development project. After several of the principal figures suffer grisly deaths, Lavardin arrives to get to the bottom of it all.

In the 1986 followup Inspector Lavardin, the detective travels to a small coastal town to investigate the puzzling death of a wealthy writer found murdered on a beach, with the word "pig" scrawled on his backside. Lavardin is thrown off balance when he discovers that the writer's widow is none other than his own former lover.

Writing about Chicken With Vinegar, critic Jonathan Rosenbaum said of Chabrol: "At last! The petit-maître is back in form, doing what he knows how to do best." "The character study is magnificently handled," said Dennis Schwartz of Ozus' World Movie Reviews. The New York Times' Caryn James called Inspector Lavardin a "wily film [with] first-rate appeal ... cleverly sophisticated." Geoff Andrew of Time Out London called the film "strangely tender, bizarrely funny, with gorgeous performances from Bernadette Lafont and Jean-Claude Brialy."

The INSPECTOR LAVARDIN COLLECTION includes the two additional Lavardin mysteries that Chabrol directed for television: "The Black Snail" (1988) and "Danger Lies in the Words" (1989). Other extras in the set are audio commentary by film critics Wade Major and Andy Klein and a new essay by critic Peter Tonguette.
