Movie 43: Outrageous Edition Blu-ray Review

Reviewed by Jami Ferguson
From the twisted minds of producers Peter Farrelly (Hall Pass, Shallow Hal) and Charles Wessler (There’s Something About Mary, Dumb & Dumber), comes Movie 43-- the outrageous new ensemble comedy starring some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Movie 43 is not for the easily-offended and contains jaw-dropping, sometimes shockingly disturbing, but always entertaining intertwined story-lines you’ll have to see to believe.

Film (2 out of 5 stars)

Two teenage boys have invented a game called The Human Dartboard.  Instead of throwing darts at the board they throw the board at the dart in one of their mouths.  They immediately post the video on line and excitedly watch the hit counter rise.  Turns out that one of the boy’s younger brother cloned the site and inflated the number of views as a joke.  To get him back they decide to freeze his laptop by loading it with viruses from porn.  They have to steal the laptop so they distract the boy by telling him they are unable to locate a movie on the internet.   The teens explain that if you can watch Movie 43 all the way through without “pulling your dick off” then you will be rewarded beyond your wildest dreams.

As they look for the movie on various hidden and eventually dangerous/classified sites they pull up other films.  In one short film Hugh Jackman is on a blind date with Kate Winslet.  Her character can’t understand why he is still single until he removes his scarf to reveal neck-testicles that no one in the restaurant seems to notice.  In another film, Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts play the most disturbing parents you’ll ever see who are far too involved in homeschooling their son and making his teenage experience authentic.

One of the funnier films centers around the superhero Robin who's on a speed date but has to deal with Batman, Supergirl and Wonder Woman who are making it uncomfortable for him.    Jason Sudeikis’ batman is pretty funny but you definitely need a sense of humor about your superheroes.  Richard Gere plays an executive in another film whose team has created the ibabe.  The ibabe looks exactly like a full size naked woman.  Sales are great but the vagi-port fan is causing men to have their genitalia mangled when they use the ibabe for more than music.

Other films include Hale Berry playing truth or dare on a match.com blind date and Gerard Butler playing two seriously angry leprechauns.  As the boys search for Movie 43 they get into some serious trouble and they inadvertently bring about the end of the world.  The back cover of the Blu ray claims “you’ve never seen anything quite like this” – while that’s true it’s not necessarily a good thing.  This type of humor just isn’t my thing even though its cast includes Hale Berry, Dennis Quaid, Gerard Butler, Josh Duhamel and Elizabeth Banks.

I hoped this was just an amazingly hilarious film with a script these actors just couldn't pass up.  After watching the film I assume they were paid an insane amount of money and the writers were high as a kite!I’d be willing to bed teenage boys would be rolling in the aisles.  It’s also a really good movie to watch with a group of friends and the more alcohol consumed the funnier this will be.  I watched both the theatrical and the alternate cut and both are highly inappropriate for young children.  All the shorts are clearly pushing every boundary ever set.   This is similar humor to previous spoof movies, just with more disgusting plot lines and plenty of low brow humor.  Offhand I can think of a half dozen of my friends that would absolutely love every second of this.

Video (4 out of 5 stars)

Movie 43 is a crisp, clean picture worthy of a much better film.  You’ll notice detail in blood and worse that will make you cringe.  Colors are rich and skin tones are accurate and consistent.  The Blu ray contains the theatrical and alternate cuts in high definition and the DVD contains the film in standard definition.

Audio (4 out of 5 stars)

Movie 43 also sounds better than it needs to.  Dialogue is even and consistent and volume does not need adjustment.  You’ll be just as grossed out by the things you see as the things you hear in this film.

Extras (1 out of 5 stars)

Although I didn't love the movie, I was still looking forward to the special features.  Specifically I assumed that there would be outtakes as all the serious actors in the film try to control their laughter.
The Blu ray contains the following special features:
  • Find Our Daughter – Julianne Moore plays a mother searching for their daughter that likes to take her top off.
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Sneak Peak – Trailers for The Heat, The Blu ray experience, 21 & Over, and The Oranges are available and can be played individually or with a play all option.
  • Digital Copy of the film

Summary (3 out of 5 stars)

While it looks and sounds good, this film is not for me.  It has parade of stars but it’s a lot of toilet humor that I didn't find amusing.  It must have been expensive to make this film and pay all those star salaries.  The target audience is probably sixteen year old boys or twenty something groups of guys who are either drunk, high or both.  It’s probably a good party movie but it’s not a film that I’d like to watch again.
